“Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” - Matthew 6:31-34
In modern life, we not only worry about having things, we are consumed by busyness to obtain more and better things. Jesus teaches us that – while we obviously need things – we shouldn’t be so consumed with things.
Instead, Jesus teaches us to prioritize the Father’s way and getting aligned with the Father’s way of doing things. (What the translators call “his kingdom,” which Jesus tells us is “your will be done.” - Matthew 6:10)
Jesus says, don’t get anxious about tomorrow’s problems, but just deal with what is going on today. That is, be present in this moment, thinking and doing the things of heaven, which are not material things. By practicing the ways of heaven here and now – even as you conduct your daily business – you need not be consumed with busyness, but there is abundance for everyone. It is not that hard to provision ourself with food, drink and clothes. That’s all we really need in this moment. Whatever else comes our way is in addition to being present in the here and now, fully focused on practicing the ways of the heavens.
Jesus teaches that, first, practice heavenly thoughts and actions in this moment, and all the rest of the things you need will come available.
I venture to say that, not just your needs, but even your wants will come your way and remain established in your life … if you keep heavenly things as your focus and priority.
